INTRODUCTION

The VIP-848 "MegaCast"™ PC Keyboard Broadcaster allows 1 PC PS/2 style keyboard to control up 8 PC's. The output of the keyboard is routed simultaneously to all connected and powered on PC's providing all with the required responses and assuring correct boot-up of each. If an AT style keyboard is to be used than the VIP-301-5F6M adapter must be used. The adapter is not supplied with the unit and may be purchased from Vetra separately.

NOTE: The "MegaCast" does not come with keyboard extension cables for connection of the MegaCast to the PC's. They may be purchased from Vetra separately.

INSTALLATION

There are two main steps to connect the Broadcaster:

1. Connect Keyboard to Broadcaster unit: The keyboard (PS/2 or AT style) is connected to the Broadcaster at the backpanel marked "KBD IN".

2. Connect PC's Keyboard Port to Broadcaster:
a) Connect the keyboard port of PC#1 to the Broadcaster at the backpanel connector marked "TO PC1 KBD PORT".
b) Repeat the above step for all remaining PC keyboard ports to the backpanel connectors marked "TO PC#2 - TO PC#8 KBD PORT"

OPERATION

1. Power Up Sequence

The Broadcaster unit receives its power from any one of the powered on PC's and/or shared when more than one PC is on. A power on switch, marked POWER, on the front panel of the Broadcaster applies power to the keyboard. It may also be used to reset the Broadcaster. Any one of the PC's maybe powered on any time and in any order without affecting the operation of the Broadcaster or its attached PC's. Similarly, the Broadcaster may be powered down at any time without affecting the operation of the attached PC's. They may also be powered down at any time in any order. Just as a normal PC, it is not recommended that the keyboard be operated during power-up of any PC.

2. Keyboard Status Indicators

The keyboard's status indicator lights, Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock are controlled via the PC by commands to the keyboard. Since the Broadcaster connects one keyboard to many PC's, conflict in keyboard indicator control occurs. To avoid this conflict, commands from the PC's controlling the keyboard indicator lights are intercepted and not routed to the keyboard. Therefore, operating the Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keys will not result in the lighting of the corresponding indicators. This is normal and not a failure of the Broadcaster. Their functions in the PC's are not affected and operate normally.
