Description: The VIP-411 / 412 “SmartAe”™ Encoders convert switch or contact closures to RS-232 protocol ASCII codes. Switch inputs can be individual closures to a common line or matrix closures. Switch closures are debounced, and the ASCII code for the closed switch is sent once on the RS-232 output. No code is sent when the contact is opened. Multiple switches can be closed simultaneously. The ASCII character, and its hexadecimal representation, generated for a particular switch closure is shown in Table 10 for the VIP-411 and in Table 11 for the VIP-412. J1 is the switch input connector to the Encoder. If the standard maps do not meet your requirements, we can also customise our standard SmartAe series to your needs or specifications, including multiple key strokes from a single contact closure. Connections: Switch input connector is a 26 pin double row on 0.1 in contact spacing ideal for ribbon cable connector. That RS-232 connection is a male DB-9 connector. The encoder sends data on pin 3 and pin 5 is signal ground. Specifications: Dimensions for models VIP-411 and VIP-412 are 1.5 in H x 5.08 in W x 5.25 in D (3.81 cm x 12.90 cm x 13.34 cm). All housings are molded of black GE Cycolac-T, a high impact ABS material, and are internally shielded with an acrylic base nickel coating for RFI attenuation. Front and rear panels are fabricated from .062 in thick aluminum and finished with low gloss paint. All models require +5 Vdc at 50 mA power source. The VIP-210 power supply is recommended (see Accessories ). The dimensions for the OEM models (PCB assembly only) are 4.10 in x 4.80 in (10.45 cm x 12.19 cm). Shipping weight is less than 1 lb. for all units.
