Description: The VIP-808 "MegaSwitch"™ Multi-Head KVM switch allows one PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse and three monitors to control up to 64 dual head / dual video PCs. The scalability of this KVM Switch makes it the perfect solution for KVM switch applications requiring access to large numbers of multi-monitor computers and servers, without the clutter and expense of additional keyboards, mice and monitors. The VIP-808 Multi-Head KVM Switch supports all popular PS/2 keyboards and PS/2 mice, including Microsoft IntelliMouse™, and video resolution of 1600 by 1200 at 75Hz per monitor. The unique architecture of the VIP-808 provides a dedicated microprocessor for each PC. This feature makes it possible to "hot-plug" keyboards and mice, at any time, and power the connected PCs up and down, in any order. At the heart of the MegaSwitch is Vetra's advanced keyboard and mouse emulation technology which provides error free boot up and mouse driver loading for each connected PC, and allows the MegaSwitch to operate transparently with all IBM compatible PCs, PC operating systems, and applications. All VIP-808 Multi-Head KVM Switch models are powered by the connected PCs so no external power supply is required. Non-expandable MegaSwitch models can control up to eight PCs, and the expandable models may be cascaded to a maximum of eight units, to access a total of 64 PCs. Expansion is accomplished by assigning a unique sequential "bank" number to each MegaSwitch in the chain via the bank select switch located on the front panel of the KVM switch. A "bank" consists of a MegaSwitch and its connected PCs. Connections between banks are made using inexpensive "off the shelf" RJ45 and video cables connected to the rear of the units. The VIP-808 Multi-Head KVM Switch comes in a variety of standard configurations, is rugged and compact in design and easy to install and operate. For applications requiring rack mounting, an optional 2U height rack mount tray is available (see Accessories ). For more information on this product or our complete line of KVM solutions, please contact us at sales@vetra.com OPERATION: All VIP-808 "MegaSwitch" Multi-Head KVM switch models can select the active PC via a keyboard "hot-key" sequence ( [scroll lock] + [1] for PC1, or [scroll lock] + [3] for PC3, etc ) or by a push button(s) located on the front panel of the KVM Switch. Only "powered" PCs may be selected. The Direct Entry models (as indicated by -DE in the model number) have an individual push button switch for each selectable PC channel as well as an "auto-scan" mode ([scroll lock] +"A"). Auto-scan sequentially switches through each connected and powered PC, pausing for 5 seconds at each PC before automatically switching to the next PC. The selection of any powered PC channel terminates the auto-scan mode. The non-DE models have a single push button (NEXT PC) which provides manual sequential switching through all PC channels. Each time the "NEXT PC" button is depressed it switches to the next PC channel in the cycle. In all cases on either model, when a PC channel is selected, an LED on the front panel illuminates to indicate the selected PC while additional front panel LED's indicate which PC channels are powered. Upon selection, the intelligence in the MegaSwitch correctly sets the keyboard's status indicators, CAPS, SCROLL, and NUM Lock, as these settings may be different for each PC. The keyboard and/or mouse may be disconnected and re-connected (hot-plugged), or exchanged at any time without having to power down the connected PC's. This feature is useful if a connected device fails during a critical application.

Connections: PC's to MegaSwitch - Standard male-male extension cables are used to connect the MegaSwitch to the keyboard and mouse ports of the PC's, and standard HDD15 Male-female video cables are used to connect to the video ports of PC's. Using standard cables eliminates the need to replace an entire multi-port cable if one connection is damaged or fails, thereby reducing the overall cost of maintainence. You may use your cables, or ours (see Accessories ). Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor to MegaSwitch - The captive cables that are part of the keyboard, mouse, and monitors are used to connect these devices the the KVM switch. Extension cables are also available for short run extensions. Expansion - When making "bank to bank" connections, the keyboard, mouse, and control data are transmitted using standard RJ45 cables, while video signals are transmitted using standard VGA extension cables. We recommend the use of mini-coax type video cables to prevent induced noise and signal degradation. These can be purchased from Vetra (see Accessories ). Extending Capabilities of the MegaSwitch: Remote Control- The MegaSwitch may be controlled from a distance. For RS-232 control, VETRA's VIP-335 "SmartPipe" Converters keyboard wedge allows ASCII RS-232 control of selected PC. For contact closure control, a connector can be made available on a special order basis. Extended Distance and Multiple Stations- The controlling keyboard, mouse and monitor may be located remotely from the MegaSwitch by using VETRA's VIP-380 keyboard/mouse extender. Multiple keyboard, mouse and monitor stations may be connected to the MegaSwitch by using one of VETRA's Multiplexers or splitters.
